Exceptional Hands-On Learning

The MA in STEAM Teaching and Learning is powered by collaborative initiatives that lead to rich service- and project-based learning experiences.

Our program’s urban focus invites students to engage with the unique opportunities and challenges of the New York City public school environment. As soon as your first semester, you’ll work directly with students and teachers at a school in Brooklyn’s District 13. There, you’ll also practice teaching and working with students at the new 9,000-square-foot STEM Center at 280Cadman Plaza, which opens next year as a resource for public schools in Brooklyn. You’ll also hone your creativity at MIXI (the Manhattan Institute for STEM and the Imagination), a STEM-focused research and practice institute housed within Adelphi’s Manhattan Center.

The MA’s curriculum centers around a three-course sequence of STEAM maker lab classes. In the first course, you’ll develop a strong foundation in design thinking as you experiment with the lab’s digital and physical tools. In the second course, you’ll use the lenses of technology and Universal Design to examine historical and contemporary approaches to educational equity. The final course, school lab, challenges you to create and design your own STEAM workshop, which you’ll teach to the public as a workshop at the MIXI lab or a partner school in District 13.
