How to Apply for Financial Aid

Step 1: Get an FSA ID

Before completing the FAFSA, you (and at least one parent for dependent students) must create a Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID. You will need an FSA ID to access Federal Student Aid’s online systems and to sign your FAFSA.

Step 2: Complete Your FAFSA

The FAFSA uses your and your family’s financial information to determine eligibility for need-based federal and state financial aid. Submit your application as soon as possible on or after October 1stusing Adelphi’s federal school code: 002666.

To maximize your consideration for need-based aid, be sure to file by the priority deadline:

  • November 1: Priority deadline for new Spring undergraduate and transfer students
  • March 1: Priority deadline for new Fall undergraduate and transfer students

Helpful hint: Using theIRS Data Retrieval Toolwhen completing the FAFSA is highly recommended as it will minimize the amount of additional documentation you may have to submit. In order to protect your privacy, using this tool will not display your tax return information on the web page, on your FAFSA form or on your Student Aid Report (SAR). Instead, you’ll see “Transferred from the IRS” in the appropriate fields.

Submit the FAFSA

Step 4: Submit Requested Documentation

Following submission of your FAFSA, additional documentation may be requested. It’s important to respond promptly to requests for information to maximize the aid available.

  • If selected forverification, additional documents must be requested before an aid package can be issued including tax returns, verification worksheets, household size information, and citizenship documentation.
  • Federal loan recipients are required by the government to complete the following two additional steps (if moving forward with loan):
    • Complete an online Entrance Counseling session (a short question/answer session regarding educational borrowing).
    • Sign an electronic promise to repay all loans, known as a Master Promissory Note (MPN).

Loans are unable to be disbursed until these requirements are completed on theFederal Student Aid website. Each process can be accessed 24 hours a day and will take approximately 30 minutes to complete.

Step 5: Review Your Financial Assistance Plan

After you have been admitted and have submitted your FAFSA and required documents, you will receive a financial assistance plan, detailing your financial aid awards. Review this information and all accompanying materials.

This plan outlines your eligibility for the different types of financial aid including:

  • scholarships and grants (free money)
  • student loans (which must be repaid)
  • work study

Be sure to review your enrollment and housing status indicated on your plan. If something has changed please contact us to update your preferences and recalculate your costs and financial aid, as necessary.

Step 6: Pay Your Balance

Upon registering for classes, an e-bill is generated for your review and payment. It can be accessed and viewed by logging into your eCampus account. The document will reflect all relevant charges and anticipated financial aid.

If you are a student pre-registering for the fall and spring semesters, you’ll be billed in June and November, respectively.
